Deutsche Bahn had suspended the critical connection last week due to severe damage discovered on multiple rail switches.
According to an announcement by the company, full service on the route is scheduled to restart on Thursday, July 17. From that date, regional trains operated by Bayerische Regiobahn are also expected to run again to the Bavarian Oberland.
A partial reopening may occur even earlier. If repair work progresses as planned, S-Bahn line S3 could resume operations on the northern segment between Munich and Deisenhofen starting July 10.
Sudden Closure and Poor Replacement Services Triggered Public Frustration
The abrupt suspension of train service south of Munich sparked widespread dissatisfaction and confusion among passengers, especially affecting students, commuters, and tourists.
Criticism was also directed at the inadequacy of the replacement transport services. Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter, the Munich district authorities, and passenger advocacy groups all expressed concerns over poor organization. The buses and large taxis provided lacked both capacity and reliability, posing major problems for daily commuters and schoolchildren.
Norbert Moy of the passenger association Pro Bahn described the situation as a severe transportation failure. He emphasized that an entire region depends on this connection and noted that, during peak excursion season, trains on this line are typically “filled to the last seat.”
Deutsche Bahn Repairs Damaged Switches Using Temporary Rail Segments
Deutsche Bahn reported that the substitute buses now operate on a 20-minute schedule between Munich-Giesing and Holzkirchen. To expedite the return of rail service, some damaged switches are being temporarily replaced with straight rail segments.
Other switches will be permanently replaced. The company’s sleeper and switch production facility has increased output to supply the necessary components without delay. The goal, according to Deutsche Bahn, is to restore normal train operations as quickly and reliably as possible.
