The works will affect five of the eight S-Bahn lines, and part of the routes will be interrupted by replacement bus services.
When the restrictions will apply
The restrictions will take effect on Friday, 24 July, at 21:50, and will remain in place until Monday morning at 5:00. Deutsche Bahn cites wear on the points at Pasing station, where traffic density is among the highest in the Bavarian network, as the reason for the works. The only line to keep its usual route is S6: it will continue to run from Pasing through the main tunnel into the city centre.
Which lines are affected
Other passengers face more significant changes:
— S1, S2, S6, S7 run their normal routes, though the S6 timetable towards Tutzing from the Ostbahnhof will change.
— S3 is out of service between Lochhausen and Hackerbrücke — buses will replace trains between Lochhausen and Pasing.
— S4 runs only between Geltendorf and Pasing.
— S5 runs only between Aying and the Ostbahnhof. This overlaps with the bus replacement service already in effect between Kreuzstraße and Aying, put in place because of separate construction works.
— S8 runs only between Herrsching and the main station, without stopping at Pasing, as well as on a separate section between the Ostbahnhof and the airport.
Passengers on the S8 who need the airport will have to change at the main station or use the S1: there will be no direct connection to the Ostbahnhof on the S8 during this period. S3 trains coming from the west will terminate at Lochhausen, while trains in the opposite direction will already turn back at Hackerbrücke.
Deutsche Bahn stresses that passengers on lines S1, S2 and S7 should not experience additional inconvenience. The company recommends that anyone planning a trip during this period check the timetable in advance via the DB Navigator or MVV apps, since the limited number of available tracks may also cause isolated deviations from the announced schedule.
Works to continue into autumn
The coming weekend is only the first of three stages of reconstruction: the second and third will take place in August and September. In total, 23 switches are to be replaced, along with around 900 sleepers and roughly 800 tonnes of ballast.
The current repairs are part of a broader programme to reconstruct the Munich network. A longer-term restriction is already in effect on the S5 south of the city: between Aying and Kreuzstraße, trains have been replaced by buses until mid-October, while a bridge is being built to replace an unsafe level crossing. Night-time traffic through the tunnel is also being restricted because of construction of a second main line, intended to relieve congestion on the central section of the network by 2028.
At the same time, restrictions remain in place on the U3 and U6 metro lines in the city, with buses replacing trains. Against this backdrop, the fate of the bicycle lane on Lindwurmstraße is also under discussion — there are proposals to return part of the lane to cars so that replacement buses can move faster. Passengers should allow extra time for their journeys and check their routes in advance.
