Federal police discovered an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with explosive material in dangerous proximity to a Ukrainian cargo aircraft, an Antonov. This discovery attests to the intensification of a network of agents from the intelligence services of certain countries. And it confirms that the series of incidents at German airports, during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, has a clear connection and is not mere coincidence.
How was the drone discovered?
A combat drone was spotted by airport staff shortly before midnight. Almost simultaneously, a second suspicious object was discovered on the southern runway. According to a NATO representative, the drone contained explosive material with an activated detonator – essentially constituting an improvised explosive device ready to detonate.
The discovery of the dangerous drone led to an immediate halt in air traffic. Leipzig/Halle airport, which serves more than 2 million passengers annually and is a key logistics hub for cargo aviation in the EU, immediately moved into heightened alert status.
Defusing operation
Federal police arrived at the scene early in the morning and immediately began the process of neutralizing the dangerous object. The unmanned aircraft was transported to a specially prepared facility for such incidents. There it was subjected to X-ray scanning and other forms of analysis to determine the method of defusal. Given the presence of explosive material in the drone, bomb disposal experts employed specialized safety protocols, ruling out any possibility of detonation.
Concurrently, an evacuation of passengers and aircraft from the potential impact zone was carried out. Several aircraft, including one passenger flight, were diverted to nearby airports in Dresden and Berlin, which made it possible to minimize risks to civilians.
Investigation
Federal police, together with the Saxony state police, commenced a joint investigation into the incident. By two o’clock in the morning, the northern runway had resumed operations and is functioning normally. The southern runway, unfortunately, remains closed for investigative procedures and additional security protocol reviews.
For flight safety purposes, law enforcement officials assessed the incident as an event of the utmost importance, but emphasized that at the time of discovery of the explosive device, there was no acute threat to the lives of passengers and airport personnel.
