Technical Failure Traps Dozens in Munich Parking Garage for Hours

An unusual incident in downtown Munich on Tuesday afternoon left around 60 drivers temporarily stranded in an underground parking garage after a system malfunction prevented vehicles from exiting. The incident prompted a coordinated response by the fire department and police.

The affected drivers were stuck in a facility on Oberanger street after a technical failure disrupted the payment system and disabled the exit barriers, according to the Munich Fire Department. As a result, neither payment for parking fees nor the automatic opening of the gate was possible.

Two-Hour Wait Before Emergency Intervention

Attempts to reach the garage operator were unsuccessful, both by those affected and by the city’s Integrated Control Center. With no representative from the facility available, frustrated drivers waited for approximately two hours before emergency services were called.

Firefighters Manually Remove Barrier After Police Consultation

Following coordination with local police, the fire brigade dispatched a rescue fire truck and a command vehicle to the scene. Firefighters dismantled the exit barrier manually, allowing the trapped motorists to leave the premises. According to officials, no property damage occurred during the operation.

Cause of System Failure Still Unknown

It remains unclear what caused the system breakdown. The fire department reported that the malfunction appeared to be isolated to the ticketing and gate mechanism, with no further disruptions observed.

While no one was injured and the situation was eventually resolved, the incident highlights the potential consequences of technical glitches in automated infrastructure and the challenges emergency responders face in such unexpected situations.
