The collision occurred shortly before noon on Monday at the Donnersbergerstraße tram stop along Arnulfstraße, directly in front of the Mercedes Tower. According to police reports, the SUV driver lost control and plowed into the glass shelter, striking people waiting for the tram. Emergency responders confirmed that seven individuals were hurt, including three who sustained major injuries.
Among the most severely injured is the young student, who suffered traumatic head injuries. On Tuesday, a police spokesperson stated that her condition was life-threatening and that survival could not yet be assured.
A 79-year-old Munich resident was also seriously hurt, with doctors diagnosing a brain hemorrhage. A 44-year-old man from the Munich district sustained broken ribs and a shoulder injury. Both remain hospitalized.
The 52-year-old driver, from the district of Miesbach in Upper Bavaria, walked away from the crash physically unharmed. Police have launched an investigation against him on suspicion of negligent bodily harm. A woman standing near a ticket booth was also injured in the impact.
To determine how the crash occurred, police have brought in an independent accident expert. Investigators are exploring whether a delivery van might have also been involved, though its exact role is still unclear.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and terrifying. One woman recounted how the BMW sped directly toward the crowd: “There was an awful bang. The entire shelter was destroyed.”
Authorities are continuing to collect evidence and urge any additional witnesses to come forward.
