According to the Munich police, the victims are two twelve-year-old boys, both residents of Munich. Eyewitnesses reported that the boys were riding together on an e-scooter along the sidewalk on Else-Rosenfeld-Straße, heading toward Kreillerstraße. At the intersection with Kreillerstraße, they apparently attempted to cross straight ahead when the tram struck them.
At that moment, a tram approached and, for reasons not yet fully determined, collided with the scooter. The boy in front, who was steering the vehicle, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted by rescue helicopter to a clinic in Murnau. The second child was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Munich.
Contrary to initial reports from the fire department that indicated the children were in life-threatening condition, police later stated that although their injuries were severe, their lives were not in immediate danger.
Initial Report from July 18, 10:50 a.m.: Tram Accident at Kreillerstraße
The serious traffic accident occurred on Thursday evening, July 17, at around 8:00 p.m. in the area of Kreillerstraße and Else-Rosenfeld-Straße. According to Munich’s fire department, an emergency call was received by the integrated control center shortly after 8:00 p.m., reporting that two children had been struck head-on by a tram.
Several ambulances, two emergency physicians, and personnel from the Munich professional fire department were immediately dispatched to the scene. Responders were met with a distressing scene: both children were lying seriously injured in the street and received immediate emergency medical treatment.
Following initial stabilization, one of the boys was transported by helicopter to the accident clinic in Murnau, while the second child was taken to a specialized hospital in Munich. At the time of their transport, both children were in critical but stable condition.
Psychological Support for the Mother and Tram Driver
The mother of the two children, who reportedly witnessed the accident, went into shock and required psychological care. The tram driver, who was visibly shaken, also received immediate support from Munich’s crisis intervention team at the scene.
Munich police began investigating the cause of the accident right away. The investigation is focusing on witness statements, available video footage, and the tram’s technical systems.
Traffic Disruptions Following the Accident
The incident caused significant disruptions in the area around Kreillerstraße. Tram service was temporarily suspended, and car traffic had to be rerouted due to emergency operations and ongoing investigations.
