Munich — Bad news for passengers in the Bavarian capital: those who rely on buses, trams, and the subway in Bavaria should expect warning strikes in the coming weeks. Haris Softic of the Verdi union told our newspaper: “To overcome the employers’ blocking position, Munich’s public transport will also participate in a series of strike actions.”
Union Announces Strikes — Munich Also Targeted
Following the first round of negotiations, Verdi representatives stated that they “see no other way to force the employers to move” in the dispute over salary increases. Consequently, significant warning strikes are likely across the Free State of Bavaria before the next round of talks, scheduled for February 13. Exactly when these strikes will begin was initially left unclear. Sinan Öztürk, deputy head of the Verdi state district, explained: “As soon as we have determined a date, we will announce it.”
The union’s list of demands is extensive: it includes a monthly salary increase of 668.75 euros and a transition from a 38.5-hour work week to a 35-hour work week with no reduction in pay. The Association of Municipal Employers in Bavaria (KAV Bayern) called these demands unrealistic: “They far exceed the economic capabilities of any enterprise.” In 2023, it took a total of five rounds of negotiations accompanied by warning strikes to reach an agreement.
