Fatal Train Accident Near Munich Renews Calls for Safety Barriers at Railway Crossing

A 59-year-old woman died on Wednesday after being struck by an S-Bahn train while crossing the tracks near the Wächterhof station in Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn, south of Munich.

The tragic incident occurred at an unsecured railway crossing that local authorities and Deutsche Bahn have been discussing upgrading for years.

According to police reports, the accident took place at approximately 5:15 p.m. The woman, a resident of the Munich district, had been walking with her bicycle along the rear Altlaufweg path in a southwesterly direction. As she crossed the tracks near the Wächterhof S-Bahn stop—at a level crossing not equipped with mechanical barriers—she was hit by an incoming train and suffered fatal injuries.

The incident forced around 200 passengers to disembark from the train. Rail traffic on the affected section of track was halted for about two and a half hours. The Munich traffic police have launched a formal investigation into the accident.

Crossing Was Only Equipped with Light and Sound Signals

The crossing where the fatality occurred currently has only red flashing lights and acoustic warnings mounted above traditional St. Andrew’s crosses. There are no physical barriers, as traffic volume at the site has been previously assessed as too low to justify the installation of a fully automated security system.

Mayor Mindy Konwitschny of Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Speaking to Münchner Merkur, she said: “I know this crossing very well and often ride my bicycle there. One has to be extremely alert and cannot rely solely on the signals.”

Barrier Project Has Faced Delays Due to Land Negotiations and Environmental Concerns

According to Konwitschny, the municipality has been working for several years to secure a comprehensive safety upgrade for the crossing, including the installation of a barrier system. Plans have been drafted and approved by the municipal council, and ongoing coordination with Deutsche Bahn has taken place.

However, the project has encountered multiple obstacles. Redesigning the crossing requires negotiations with private landowners, and parts of the adjacent protected forest must be taken into account—further complicating the implementation.

Local officials now hope that the recent fatality will serve as a catalyst for accelerating the long-stalled upgrade. The stated goal is to expedite the introduction of enhanced safety measures and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
