A full closure of the railway line between Bamberg and Forchheim has been scheduled from 25 August to 9 September, according to Deutsche Bahn. The reason is the ongoing quadruple-track expansion of the key rail corridor between Nuremberg and Bamberg.
Long-distance travel rerouted with major delays
The closure will lead to substantially longer travel times, canceled stops, and the use of replacement buses for regional services. Deutsche Bahn has announced that long-distance trains will be rerouted on a wide detour via Augsburg and Würzburg, resulting in up to 100 minutes of additional travel time. The regular ICE stops in Coburg, Bamberg, and Erlangen will be suspended entirely during the closure period.
Final stage of track expansion underway
Deutsche Bahn stated that the construction will take place between Altendorf and Strullendorf in the Bamberg district. As part of the project, newly constructed tracks will be connected to the existing rail infrastructure and brought into operation. Since these measures cannot be carried out while trains are running, a complete closure of the line is unavoidable.
Replacement services and travel advice
To mitigate the impact on local and S-Bahn services, express and shuttle buses will operate between Forchheim and Bamberg. Intercity trains on the Munich/Nuremberg–Berlin line will run every two hours via alternate routes.
Deutsche Bahn is urging all passengers to check their travel plans in advance and stay informed through the DB website or DB Navigator app. The closure is expected to be lifted on 9 September at 5:00 a.m., according to the railway operator.
