According to a police spokesperson, the blaze started inside a cupboard in a laundry room. The total damage is reported to be relatively minor.
The fire was quickly brought under control during the night. Police stated that emergency crews had concluded their operation just 50 minutes after the initial alarm. No one was injured in the incident.
Possible Cause: Chemical Reaction of Cleaning Agents
Preliminary findings suggest that the fire originated near a cupboard used for storing cleaning products. Investigators currently do not suspect arson. Instead, it is believed that a chemical reaction may have occurred involving cleaning agents that remained on used cloths.
The castle restaurant, which also houses a hotel, is located just about one hundred meters from Neuschwanstein Castle. The building was originally constructed as a canteen for the craftsmen who worked on the castle’s construction.
Neuschwanstein Castle: UNESCO World Heritage Site and Major Tourist Attraction
Only in July of this year, the Bavarian royal castles built by King Ludwig II – including Neuschwanstein Castle – were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Often described as a fairytale castle, Neuschwanstein ranks among Germany’s most visited landmarks, attracting around 1.4 million visitors annually. During summer, official records show that on certain days more than 6,000 guests tour the castle.
Neuschwanstein, the first of the four royal castles to be built, is renowned for its iconic romantic towers and its dramatic location set against a striking mountain backdrop. Construction began in 1868 under the order of King Ludwig II of Bavaria but was never fully completed.
