Every day, thousands of people use the S-Bahn in Munich. To make waiting times more pleasant and platforms more comfortable, Deutsche Bahn has planned extensive improvements to be carried out in 2025 at various points in the city’s suburban rail network.
“We are investing specifically in our stations to convince even more people to switch to train travel, especially in and around Germany’s traffic congestion capital. Around two-thirds of all passengers using public transport in Bavaria travel on the Munich S-Bahn,” said Esther Heckmann, head of the Southern Regional Division at DB InfraGO Passenger Stations.
The modernization measures focus particularly on the so-called “Future Stations,” which are to be made barrier-free and given a modern design. Approximately 34,000 passengers daily are expected to benefit from the improvements in Munich. The total investment amounts to around seven million euros, funded jointly by Deutsche Bahn and the federal government.
The following stations in Munich’s S-Bahn network are set for modernization:
Lochhausen (S3)
Since autumn 2024, the underpass has been fitted with new tiles and a renewed floor surface. New seating areas and free Wi-Fi have also been installed on the platform. This month, work began on renovating the station building, which includes the stairways, an elevator, and a bakery. By autumn, the station’s interior and exterior are to feature new floors, tiled walls, and a newly designed shopfront for a fresh appearance. Bright LED lighting will be installed in the underpass and the building, along with an additional information display and an improved guidance system to enhance orientation.
Gilching-Argelsried (S8)
Following the completed redesign of the entrance to the underpass, artistic redesign work on the underpass itself is set to begin in August. In addition, the lighting will be converted to modern LED technology, and clearer signage will be installed. All modernization work is expected to be finished by October.
Feldkirchen (S2)
Here, work will focus on the underpass, which will receive a new tile pattern and LED lighting. The station building will also undergo energy-efficient refurbishment and a façade modernization. Construction is scheduled to start in autumn, with completion planned for 2026.
St.-Martin-Straße (S3/S5)
The underpass and access to the platform will be redesigned to appear brighter and more inviting. A new guidance system and additional information displays will improve orientation. This project is currently in the detailed planning phase, with construction set to begin in autumn.
Buchenau (S4)
In cooperation with the city of Fürstenfeldbruck, Deutsche Bahn is developing a comprehensive concept for redesigning the station area. This includes both underpasses, the platform stairways, the bicycle parking area, access to the parking garage, and the station’s surroundings. A new signage system will also be installed here. The final details of the plan are currently being coordinated. Construction is expected to begin in autumn and be completed by 2026.
