They are fleeing Putin’s brutal war in their homeland and are now arriving in Munich in larger numbers. The tz newspaper has learned that since the beginning of April, the number of Ukrainian refugee arrivals has tripled compared to just a few months ago!
A spokesperson for the social services department stated in an inquiry: “The arrivals of refugees from Ukraine have increased to about 40 to 50 people per day, tripling the number of new arrivals since spring.”
What is causing this new wave from Ukraine? The social services spokesperson commented: “This is likely related to the relaxation of the original travel ban for men, who have been permitted to leave the country since August 27, 2025, despite martial law, as long as they are under 23 years old.” Despite the ongoing war against Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy allowed these young men to leave. They are not eligible to be drafted into the army until they turn 25.
Ukrainian Refugee Numbers Are Rising in Munich
As a result, according to the social services department, there are currently 20,773 Ukrainian refugees in the city. 3,637 of them arrived between April 1 and September 15 alone. This means that about half of all Ukrainians who came to Bavaria during that period ended up in Munich. According to the Ministry of the Interior, around 7,850 war refugees from Ukraine were registered in Bavaria during the same period. A spokesperson added: “In the same period last year, there were around 11,000 war refugees from Ukraine.”
The city is also noticing the new influx in the occupancy of its shelters. According to the social services department, the capacity of the initial reception centers for Ukrainians is “currently at about 80%.” Since August, all available lightweight halls have been used again. A total of 3,045 Ukrainians are currently living in such “medium-term accommodations.” However, the vast majority of Ukrainians—17,015 people—are staying in private housing, the spokesperson said.
Asylum Seeker Numbers Decline in Munich
On a positive note, the social services department reports a significant drop in the number of asylum seekers: “Since April 2025, no asylum seekers have been assigned to us. We expect this to continue due to the low arrival numbers in Bavaria.” There are currently 3,199 people housed in decentralized city shelters, which is about 600 fewer than in September 2024.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, the total number of asylum seekers arriving in Bavaria has decreased significantly in 2025. From January to March, 3,570 people arrived in the Free State. In the same period last year, that number was 7,573.
