The politician explained that it was a quote from a Bavarian cabaret artist that involuntarily came to mind and issued a written request for forgiveness.
The incident occurred just days before the city’s mayoral election, scheduled for March 8, 2026. During a general assembly while reviewing documents, Reiter was recorded saying: “So, where are we, as they say…”, followed by the slur. Audio and video recordings of the meeting confirm the phrase, which was first reported by the outlet Hallo München. The term, referred to as an “NS-word,” is a racist designation for Black people that is recognized as unacceptable in modern practice.
Apology and context of the statement
Reiter issued an apology in a written statement, clarifying that the remark was a fragment from a work by the artist Fredl Fesl. According to the politician, the phrase spontaneously came to mind while he was searching for a specific item on the agenda. Alfred Raimund “Fredl” Fesl was a well-known Lower Bavarian musician and cabaret artist.
In his address, Reiter emphasized:
- He had no intention to offend or humiliate anyone.
- He expressed sincere regret that his words might have hurt anyone’s feelings.
- He acknowledged his special responsibility as mayor to ensure respectful and discrimination-free communication.
Violation of city council anti-racism policy
The Lord Mayor added that he is well aware of the Munich City Council’s 2022 decision to “Condemn the NS-word.” This official document explicitly states that the use of this term is classified as racism. Dieter Reiter confirmed his commitment to this position, despite his recent slip.
This incident has added to a difficult election “final sprint” for Reiter, who has recently faced criticism over other issues, including disputes regarding speed limits on the Mittlerer Ring and his honorary role at FC Bayern.
