On Saturday, Deutsche Bahn gave the public the chance to take a closer look at the megaproject.
Beneath Marienhof in Munich lies Germany’s deepest construction site: the new station of the second main line is being built 45 meters underground. There, as well as at Munich Central Station, visitors were able to tour the project on Saturday. Both construction sites for the planned underground stations remained open until 6 p.m., with free admission.
Tours, children’s program, and more
At Marienhof, guests had the opportunity to descend to level -3 at about 25 meters below ground and view the newly built connecting passage to the U-Bahn. Visitors could even climb into an excavator. Guided tours, information booths, and a special program for children were also part of the day’s offerings.
Germany’s deepest train stations
According to Deutsche Bahn, construction at Munich Central Station has already reached a depth of 35 meters, while the foundation slab at Marienhof lies more than 40 meters deep. Both stations are set to become the deepest train stations in Germany. “This is more than just a tunnel project,” Deutsche Bahn told BR, adding that the project will create Germany’s most modern S-Bahn system.
Completion planned for 2035
After years of delays and changes to the plans, the costs are now estimated at around 10 billion euros. The completion of the second main S-Bahn line, including a tunnel roughly seven kilometers long, is expected in just over ten years. A Deutsche Bahn spokesperson emphasized that the company remains committed to putting the major project into operation in 2035.
