On the afternoon of June 15, passengers on several S-Bahn lines experienced delays when federal police stopped train operations on the Stammstrecke. According to police reports, the disruption was triggered by an alarm reporting a “person on the tracks.” The individual responsible was a 32-year-old passenger traveling on the S1 between Laim and Moosach/Obermenzing, who independently activated the emergency brake. He then manually opened the train doors using the emergency release and exited the train with his bicycle.
The man soon abandoned his bicycle between the tracks, apparently finding it too heavy to carry. He continued his escape on foot toward Laim station. Barefoot and without upper clothing, he eventually reached Hirschgarten station, where he left the railway premises via the elevator.
His actions led to significant delays across the entire Munich S-Bahn network. The federal police immediately launched a search operation, deploying officers and a police helicopter. The man was finally apprehended near Munich’s main train station. His bicycle, which he had left between the tracks, was also recovered. The bike bore a sign reading “free to take,” and federal police have asked the possible rightful owner to contact them at 089/5155500.
When officers checked the 32-year-old, they found a small quantity of cannabis in his possession. The man appeared slightly disoriented to the police. He claimed that he was currently living in a tent because his apartment had been destroyed in a fire. He could not explain where he had obtained the bicycle but admitted to having smoked joints earlier.
Federal police have opened an investigation against the man on suspicion of theft, dangerous interference with rail traffic, and misuse of emergency equipment. After completing police procedures, he was released from custody.
