Air traffic control halted flights around 10:00 PM for approximately half an hour. A second, brief closure followed around 11:00 PM, as a spokesperson for the Federal Police confirmed to the German Press Agency (dpa).
Several individuals—including police officers and airport staff—had previously reported “suspicious observations” to the Federal Police. As of Sunday, it was still unclear whether the sightings were of drones. A helicopter, deployed overnight according to the Federal Police, scanned the area but did not locate any drones or suspicious individuals.
Munich Airport Operations Resume Normally on Sunday
Flight operations were running regularly again by Sunday morning. An airport spokesperson stated that the disruptions had been minor. Three aircraft were diverted late on Saturday evening, one of which later managed to land in Munich.
This is not the first recent incident; in early October, air traffic at Munich Airport was halted on two consecutive evenings due to suspected drone sightings. On that occasion, nearly 10,000 travelers were affected, with some having to sleep on camp beds and sleeping mats in the terminals.
