Autumn has long since arrived in Munich, and the Christmas season is only a few weeks away. Soon, many large and small Christmas markets will be awaiting visitors in Bavaria’s capital city. For those who want to get into the festive spirit on their way into the city, this year offers the chance to arrive on a special night train from Italy.
The so-called “Espresso Monaco” is the name of a night train that will likely be familiar to many Munich residents, though in a different context. It usually operates for two weeks during the Oktoberfest to transport travelers from Rome to the Bavarian capital.
Now, on two days in the last month of the year, the “Espresso Monaco” is being transformed into a kind of Christmas Express. On December 5th and 12th, the night train will run from Roma Termini station (the main train station) all the way to Munich. Departure is at 7:57 PM on both days. The route passes through Verona, Innsbruck, and Kufstein before reaching its final destination, Munich. The Christmas train arrives at the city’s main station at 1:00 PM—plenty of time to head into the city center and stroll across the various Christmas markets. The return journeys are scheduled for December 7th and 14th at 1:40 PM, arriving in Rome the next day at 6:33 AM.
Passengers will get into the Christmas spirit during the journey itself. Not only the decorations but also a bar and a restaurant, combined with festive music and a small gift for every passenger, will heighten the Christmas anticipation.
How Much Does the Christmas Express Cost?
For those who don’t want to travel all the way to Munich, it’s also possible to get off earlier. The local Christmas markets in cities like Bolzano, Innsbruck, or Merano are also easily accessible from the train’s stops.
A journey on the Christmas Express costs €99 per adult for a second-class couchette, one way. For children between the ages of 4 and 14, the ticket costs €49.50.
