Munich Begins Overhaul of Space in Front of ‘Museum Lichtspiele’ Cinema

У районі Ау в Мюнхені розпочалися роботи з оновлення площі перед історичним кінотеатром Museum Lichtspiele.

The plan is to expand the space, introduce more greenery, and add new seating areas. Additionally, safety improvements will be made in the nearby intersection.

The city’s building department initiated the transformation project for the public space in front of the historic cinema. The goal is to enhance the attractiveness of this part of the Au district. Along with landscaping and seating installations, the plans also include improvements to the surrounding traffic infrastructure, particularly the intersection at Lilienstraße.

More Greenery and New Seating Areas Planned

Dr.-Ing. Jeanne-Marie Ehbauer, the city’s construction expert, commented on the initiative by stating, “With the redesign of the space in front of the ‘Museum Lichtspiele,’ we aim to create a much greener area and a place where people will enjoy spending time.” The plans are not only focused on improving the area’s ambiance but also on enhancing traffic safety.

The redesigned space will feature several seating arrangements. Some of these seats will include wooden seating surfaces and backrests. To allow for barrier-free access, the curbs will be lowered at several points, making the space easier to cross for all pedestrians.

Existing trees will be preserved as part of the redesign, and the area will be complemented with a diverse underplanting of grasses and perennials, selected based on ecological principles. Furthermore, the sidewalks around the square will be repaved. A smaller green section will also be added in the northeastern part of the space.

Improvements to Lilienstraße and Rosenheimer Straße

At the corner of Lilienstraße and Rosenheimer Straße, the city’s building department will expand the sidewalk. The existing tree in the area will be surrounded by a larger, enclosed green space, which will also serve as a seating area. During the construction period, left turns from Lilienstraße into Zeppelinstraße will be temporarily prohibited, although pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to pass through the site.

Additionally, a new, barrier-free pedestrian and cyclist crossing with a traffic signal will be built between the outer Ludwigsbrücke and the Lilienstraße junction on Rosenheimer Straße. This will feature tactile paving to assist blind and visually impaired individuals in safely crossing the street.

Reducing Traffic Space to Increase Public Areas

As part of the project, two lanes will be removed at the Lilienstraße intersection and one additional lane in Zeppelinstraße. The reclaimed space will be used to expand sidewalks and bike lanes, contributing to the overall improvement of the surrounding area.

Bicycle parking facilities and two disabled parking spaces will also be created in Zeppelinstraße, along with a physical connection from the existing bike lane on Zeppelinstraße to Rosenheimer Straße.

Project Completion Expected by End of Year

The work is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The district council of Au-Haidhausen, the city’s advisory board for barrier-free planning and construction, as well as the disability advisory board, have already approved the plans. The total cost of the project, including the already completed two-way bike lane in Zeppelinstraße, amounts to approximately 3.8 million euros.
