A total of eight public outdoor pools operated by Stadtwerke München (SWM) will gradually reopen over the coming weeks. The utility company has now officially announced the opening dates.
Schyrenbad Opens First on May 1
As in previous years, the Schyrenbad in Untergiesing will be the first to welcome guests. Gates will open at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, regardless of weather conditions. According to a statement from SWM, this traditional pool once again leads the city’s seasonal opening.
Two weeks later, on Thursday, May 15, five additional pools will open: Westbad (which will also keep its indoor pool accessible), Michaelibad, Prinzregentenbad, Ungererbad and Dantebad. These locations will join the Schyrenbad in offering full services to visitors.
Natural Pools Reopen in June with Georgenschwaige Debuting After Renovation
Due to its ecological filtration system, the Maria Einsiedel natural pool is scheduled to reopen later in the season. Provided that sufficient plant growth has developed in the biological regeneration basin, the pool will begin operations on Monday, June 2. This date is tentative, depending on weather and environmental factors.
On the same day, the Georgenschwaige natural pool in Schwabing will reopen for the first time following extensive renovations. The upgraded facility now features chlorine-free pools modeled after those at Maria Einsiedel. Construction, which began in March 2023, has been completed, according to SWM.
Extended Hours and Special Entry Offers Announced
Starting in early June, all eight outdoor pools will be operational. Standard opening hours run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, weekends, and public holidays, pools open an hour earlier at 9 a.m., and in favorable weather, closing time will be extended to 8 p.m.
The Schyrenbad and Prinzregentenbad will also offer early swimming hours. At Schyrenbad, swimmers can start as early as 7 a.m. from Monday to Friday, while Prinzregentenbad will open at the same time on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Admission for a full day in any city pool during the 2025 season is set at €6.30 for adults and €4 for reduced-rate tickets. Children aged 12 and under can swim for free, following a decision by Munich’s city council. Additionally, holders of a Munich Pass or a holiday pass during vacation periods will also enjoy free entry. A comprehensive schedule and pricing guide is available on the SWM website.
Nicole Gargitter, head of the swimming facilities division at SWM, expressed confidence about the upcoming season. She said she was looking forward to welcoming large numbers of guests and added that preparations were nearly complete: „The de-winterizing work at the outdoor pools is in its final phase and will be finished in time for the season launch.“
