The 33-year-old was taken to hospital after the tragic incident but could not be saved. Her death was first reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Mayor Reiter Expresses Deep Sympathy Following Tragic Death
Munich’s Lord Mayor, Dieter Reiter (SPD), expressed his profound sorrow following the news. He extended his condolences to the woman’s family and friends. In an official statement, Reiter said: “When a young person is torn from life so suddenly and tragically, it deeply affects us all.”
The precise circumstances surrounding the accident remained unclear at the time of reporting. Reiter added: “We will, of course, do everything we can to thoroughly investigate the course of the accident and take all necessary steps to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.” He acknowledged, however, that such measures offered little comfort to those mourning the loss.
Tether Line Likely Caused Fatal Outcome
The accident occurred the previous Wednesday when the woman visited the popular Eisbach wave with friends. While surfing, she fell from her board, and it is believed that the board’s leash became entangled on the riverbed, pulling her underwater. Despite immediate rescue attempts from bystanders, neither the woman nor others could free her due to the strong current.
Emergency services arrived quickly, and the fire department managed to recover the unconscious woman after a complex rescue operation. She was immediately transported to hospital in critical condition, but medical intervention ultimately proved unsuccessful.
Eisbach Wave Closed Until Further Notice
Following the incident, the Eisbach wave has been closed to the public. The City of Munich, in cooperation with relevant authorities, is now reviewing whether and under what conditions the site can be reopened. According to an official city statement, the duration of the closure remains uncertain and will depend on the outcome of police and prosecutorial investigations.
Surfing at the Eisbach has been permitted since 2010 under a general municipal order, which allows the activity at one’s own risk. However, the wave is considered suitable only for experienced and skilled surfers.
The tragic event has reignited discussions about safety standards and risk awareness at this iconic urban surf spot, which draws both locals and tourists year-round.
