This year’s edition, taking place on Saturday and marking the event’s 20th anniversary, will continue that tradition with a special twist: for the first time, the show will include a synchronized drone performance.
Since its inaugural event in 2004, the Sommernachtstraum has featured a large fireworks show as a key part of its program, with the only exceptions being during the COVID-19 pandemic years 2020 and 2021. To celebrate this milestone anniversary, the organizers have planned an especially striking production. The 30-minute show, titled “Brilliant Reflections – Der 20. Traum,” will be enhanced by a coordinated drone display that promises to add a new visual dimension to the event.
This year’s anniversary fireworks are being produced for the first time by FOG fireworks + sfx GmbH from Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia. It is the company’s debut appearance at the Sommernachtstraum. “Everything here is new territory for us,” said Technical Director Felix Pfotenhauer during a press event on Thursday in Olympiapark.
Three Days of Setup Work on the Water
Preparations for the show are extensive. The 18-member crew arrived in Munich on Wednesday to begin setup, which is scheduled to be completed by Friday. A particular challenge lies in installing the launch platforms on water: 40 out of the total 50 launch sites are positioned on the Olympic Lake. Using three boats, the pyrotechnicians transport equipment onto the small floating platforms and install the effects on-site piece by piece.
On Saturday evening, approximately 2,000 fireworks will light up the sky over Olympiapark. About 1,200 effects will be launched from the water, while another 800 so-called “bombs” will be ignited from ten stations on the Olympiaberg. These high-altitude, spherical bursts resemble the traditional fireworks seen during New Year’s Eve celebrations, Pfotenhauer explained.
Surprises and a Drone Show
Organizers expect around 30,000 visitors, a number similar to last year. Guests can look forward to a colorful and dazzling performance. “We’ve packed every color and special effect imaginable,” said Pfotenhauer. For the grand finale, the team has planned something extra: a “bonus explosion” in the form of a glittering golden rain to fittingly honor the anniversary.
A notable new feature this year is the addition of a drone show. Approximately 50 illuminated drones will create formations in the night sky over a span of five minutes. However, the exact shapes and images to be displayed remain a secret. Neither Pfotenhauer nor Tobias Kohler, spokesperson for Olympiapark München GmbH, revealed any details. “You can ask all you want – that’s going to remain a surprise,” Kohler said with a smile.
Environmental and Animal Considerations
When asked about environmental concerns, Pfotenhauer offered reassurance. All materials used are either reusable or recycled afterward. Kohler also addressed potential impacts on local wildlife, stating that there is no need for concern. “The animals have adapted to the urban environment and manage well,” he said.
Many animals tend to retreat early due to the activity during setup or, at the latest, when the fireworks begin. “We start gently and gradually increase the intensity,” Pfotenhauer assured, expressing enthusiasm for the event along with Kohler. “The weather is cooperating, the conditions are ideal – nothing stands in the way of a perfect summer evening,” Kohler concluded.
