Munich Celebrates Its 867th Anniversary with Music, Dance, and Traditional Festivities Across the City Center

This weekend, Munich’s city center will transform into a sprawling festival zone as the Bavarian capital marks the 867th anniversary of its founding. A rich program of events awaits visitors, featuring music, dance, affordable Weißwurst, and a raffle for coveted Oktoberfest tables.

On June 14 and 15, the city’s anniversary celebration will unfold under the motto “Splendor, Glory, and Delight,” inviting residents and tourists to join festivities around Marienplatz, Odeonsplatz, Rindermarkt, and Wittelsbacherplatz. More than 100 program highlights will entertain guests on both days, ranging from historical city tours and a colorful drag show to the traditional Weißwurst breakfast. The “Queen” tribute band “MerQury” is also scheduled to perform.

The official opening is set for Saturday at 11:15 a.m. on Marienplatz, where city representatives—including Mayor Dominik Kraus (Greens)—alongside the Würmesia city guard, Bavarian product queens, drag queens, and the famous market women will welcome visitors. A ceremonial cannon shot fired by the Böllerschützen will mark the acoustic start of the festival.

Music, Dance, and a Ferris Wheel Offering Panoramic Views

A special highlight for music fans is planned for Sunday at 7:30 p.m., when “MerQury” takes the stage on Marienplatz, performing classics such as “We Will Rock You” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” But the festivities will keep the city lively all day long: at Wittelsbacherplatz, a large open-air dance floor will host free workshops and dance events under the open sky. Visitors can also enjoy a ride on a 50-meter-high Ferris wheel, offering panoramic views over Munich’s rooftops.

At Rindermarkt, everything will revolve around an “Irish-Bavarian” theme, blending Irish and Bavarian culture with music, camaraderie, and beer. In front of the Feldherrnhalle, a small fairground will feature a carousel, entertainment shows, and games.

Tradition, Knowledge, and Craftsmanship on Display

At the Alter Hof, a special hands-on program awaits children and families. Under the theme “Water to the Mills! Let’s Go!”, the historical importance of the Isar River to the city will be playfully conveyed. Those eager to dance will find a warm welcome at the Altes Rathaus, where dance master Katharina Mayer will introduce participants to traditional Munich dances such as the Zwiefacher and the Française.

Another major attraction is the craft village at Odeonsplatz, where 15 Munich guilds will demonstrate their skills, from glassblowing to roofing. Contemporary art will also be present: the Association for the Promotion of Urban Art e.V. will create colorful artworks from wooden posts on site.

Weißwurst for Only €1.50 and Oktoberfest Table Raffle

On Sunday morning, visitors can enjoy a special treat in the beer garden on Marienplatz: the city is offering Weißwurst sausages for just €1.50 as a birthday gift. In addition, Oktoberfest chief Dr. Christian Scharpf will host a live raffle at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, giving away seats for the official Wiesn tapping ceremony on September 20, 2025.

Meanwhile, the Bennofest will take place around the cathedral, dedicated to Munich’s patron saint, Benno. This event offers music, spirituality, and Bavarian specialties. Performers on stage will include artist Oimara with his popular song “Wackelkontakt.”
