Deutschebahn to Invest 20 Million Euros in Temporary Main Station in Munich

Construction machinery is set to arrive at Munich Central Station as early as March. A five-story temporary building will serve as the central station terminal for the next ten years.

While maintaining continuous train operations, Deutsche Bahn (DB) has been working on two major projects in Munich simultaneously: the construction of the second S-Bahn main line and the modernization of the Main Station (Hauptbahnhof). In the next phase, a new five-story building will be erected to provide central functionality for the station complex for a decade.

Railway officials announced the start date for work at the station’s south exit. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2026 and reach completion by mid-2027. The erection of this temporary structure became necessary because half of the former buildings had already been demolished. DB informed that approximately 20 million euros have been allocated for this purpose.

Main Station to Become an “Attractive Gateway to the City”

The new building will house a passenger service center, a lost and found office, luggage lockers, and other service and operational departments. Project manager Kai Kruschinski explained: “The temporary station is the key to everything that follows. It is a fully functional station building for a set term that will ensure stable operations while we continue constructing the new Main Station and the second main line.” The works are scheduled for completion no later than 2037.

In the future, the Main Station—which, according to Munich authorities, is used daily by approximately 450,000 travelers and commuters—is intended to transform into a “modern transport hub and an attractive gateway to the city.” In addition to the new central building, which will integrate the second main line S-Bahn stop, a new station building was also being constructed on the Starnberg Wing side. Furthermore, plans included a complete renovation of the station forecourts.
