On Monday evening, August 18th, an incident occurred at Munich South Station involving a derailed car transport train, as reported by the Federal Police on Tuesday. According to officials, at approximately 9:20 PM, two railway company employees were shunting the train when it entered a blocked section of track.
Police stated that the train driver was at the rear of the train while a shunting attendant was at the front. The train controller had given clearance via radio to proceed to the next stop signal. However, the driver overran this signal, stating it wasn’t visible from her position. The shunting staff only alerted her to this after a delay.
150 Sleeping Passengers On Board
An emergency brake application couldn’t prevent one carriage from leaving the tracks and sliding several meters into the ballast area. Approximately 150 travelers were on board in sleeping compartments, all of whom remained uninjured.
The train was re-railed during the night after being released by the public prosecutor’s office and continued its journey at around 1:20 AM. Damage to the track superstructure and substructure is estimated at approximately €90,000. The Federal Police have initiated an investigation into suspected endangerment of railway traffic.
