Munich Universities Lead German Higher Education Ranking

Munich students learn at Germany's best universities. Here's how LMU and TUM perform in global comparison...

MUNICH/LUDWIGSVORSTADT – Germany’s best universities are in Munich. This is according to the prestigious “Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2025” published in Shanghai. In the national comparison, Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) and Technical University of Munich (TUM) secured first and second place respectively.

While Germany’s best university is Munich’s LMU, how do Munich’s institutions fare internationally?

LMU successfully defended its title as Germany’s top university. TUM follows in second place, with Heidelberg University ranking third. In the EU-wide comparison, LMU ranks fourth while TUM places sixth. British universities particularly excel in the European rankings.

Globally, LMU and TUM hold positions 42 and 45, firmly maintaining their places within the world’s Top 50. The strongly research-focused ranking primarily analyzes scientific publications and citations in the Web of Science database, along with counting Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals associated with each institution.

The world’s best university according to the ranking is Harvard, followed by Stanford and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (all USA). Europe’s best university is Cambridge (United Kingdom), while the top EU university is Paris-Saclay (France).
