Green trees providing shade, benches for relaxation, and wide sidewalks where pedestrians can move unhindered—this is exactly how Augustenstraße is intended to look after the completion of the long-planned modernization. City authorities planted the first trees in October last year, and the main phase of work on the section between Dachauer Straße and Görresstraße will begin in March.
A New Center with a Traffic-Calmed Zone
A new street center is planned to be created between Gabelsbergerstraße and Theresienstraße. In this commercial-pedestrian zone with a speed limit of 20 kilometers per hour, priority will be given to pedestrians, for whom the space will be expanded and the conditions for their stay improved. For this purpose, specialists will dismantle narrow bicycle paths, significantly widen sidewalks, and plant eight new trees. Additionally, street furniture will be installed on the section, and extra areas for summer cafes will be created. The roadway, which will also be used by cyclists in the future, will be widened to six meters, but visually narrowed through the use of special paving. A new safety island with a tree will mark the beginning of the zone at the corner with Gabelsbergerstraße.
City services will plant a total of 17 new trees on Augustenstraße to improve the climate. Since more space is planned to be provided for pedestrians along the entire length of the street, the roadway for cars will become narrower in several places. An additional new speed limit zone of 30 kilometers per hour will be introduced between Brienner Straße and Gabelsbergerstraße. Bicycle paths between Brienner Straße and Görresstraße will be removed in favor of wider sidewalks. To ensure cyclists remain clearly visible to drivers when turning (since they will now share the same roadway), special stop lines for bicycles will be applied at the intersections with Brienner Straße and Gabelsbergerstraße.
Reduction of More Than 50 Parking Spaces
Specialists will install ground indicators and equip differentiated crossings for people with visual impairments and limited mobility at regulated intersections with Brienner Straße, Gabelsbergerstraße, and Theresienstraße. This will increase the level of accessibility in the environment. Space for motorists, by contrast, will decrease: the number of parking spots will be reduced from the current 254 to 197. This figure includes spaces for the disabled, two car-sharing stations, and 26 spaces reserved for time-restricted delivery zones. To meet the increased demand for bicycle parking, 192 new spaces are planned, ten of which will be allocated for cargo models.
The modernization is planned to be completed by the end of 2027. The work will take place in five stages. In March, activities will begin on the western side between Steinheilstraße and Theresienstraße, followed by the western side between Gabelsbergerstraße and Steinheilstraße. After that, builders will rearrange the eastern side in the same section. From autumn 2026, the process will continue on the eastern side between Steinheilstraße and Theresienstraße. Approximately in November, workers will lay new asphalt between Gabelsbergerstraße and Theresienstraße, during which time the section will be closed to traffic. To ensure passage for local residents and suppliers, closures will be organized based on the dead-end zone principle on individual segments. The performance of remaining minor tasks is planned for 2028.Source: tz
