A 28-year-old woman from Munich fell about 20 meters down a rocky slope and sustained severe injuries.
On Friday afternoon (August 22), the woman was hiking along the eastern shore of the lake when she slipped and tumbled around 20 meters over rocks toward the water. She managed to hold on at the shoreline but, according to initial reports from the Bavarian Red Cross, she suffered significant injuries.
Her companion, who was unable to reach her or make contact, called emergency services at around 1:25 p.m. Because the situation was unclear, the Traunstein control center immediately initiated a large-scale water rescue operation.
Firefighters from Königssee, the Red Cross water rescue team, and land-based rescue units reached the site with two boats. They pulled the injured woman from the water, provided emergency medical care, and transported her by boat to Kessel. From there, she was transferred to the Austrian emergency helicopter Christophorus 6 and flown to Salzburg’s trauma hospital.
Meanwhile, a second water rescue crew and the mountain rescue team assisted the unharmed companion, who was stranded in rough terrain. They escorted her back to the Seelände area and handed her over to the mountain rescue crisis intervention team for psychological support.
Several additional regional water rescue units that had already been alerted were able to turn back en route once the situation was under control. The operation was concluded at 4:30 p.m.
