The Bavarian Lake Shipping Company (Bayerische Seenschifffahrt) has temporarily suspended boat services on Königssee due to ice formation, as announced on its official website. This has sparked hope for a rare event: a total freeze that would make the lake accessible for pedestrians.
Such an event last occurred 20 years ago. During the winter of 2005/2006, thousands of people made a daily pilgrimage across the icy surface to the St. Bartholomew’s pilgrimage church. According to community archivist Erhard Moldan, the lake has been officially opened to the public only twelve times in more than 135 years. As reported by the Abendzeitung (AZ), the lake’s immense depth and size mean it only freezes during prolonged periods of extreme cold and complete absence of wind.
Community Expects Arrival of 20,000 Tourists at Königssee
Andreas Huber, manager of the Schönau community, describes the current conditions as favorable. However, he emphasized that an ice thickness of at least twelve centimeters is required to open access, a mark that has not yet been remotely reached. “If the lake becomes accessible for walking, we expect 20,000 people or more over the weekend,” Huber told AZ.
The further development of the ice depends on the weather over the next few days. The German Meteorological Service (DWD) predicts minimum temperatures between -9°C and -12°C for southern Bavaria through Friday night, with temperatures in the Bavarian Forest potentially dropping to -15°C. However, a warming trend is expected starting Saturday, with rain or snow possible in some areas.
For this reason, Huber remains cautious. He noted that the forecast for next week suggests rising temperatures and light winds, which effectively hinder the freezing process. The local administration is monitoring the situation daily and intends to provide updates as they happen.
