The newborn is at least half of a donkey breed of which only a few hundred remain worldwide.
Liselotte is already delighting visitors with her playful nature, writes the Hof Zoo about its new donkey foal. The six-day-old foal is at least 50% of the Baroque donkey breed. While her father is a standard domestic donkey, Liselotte’s mother, Jasmin, belongs to one of Europe’s rarest domestic animal breeds.
Only 300 Baroque Donkeys Exist Worldwide
There are only around 300 specimens left of the “Austrian-Hungarian White Baroque Donkey” worldwide. According to the Hof Zoo, the only other Baroque donkeys in Bavaria are in the Bayreuth Röhrensee animal park. Their name dates back to the Baroque era when the aristocracy highly prized light-colored animals, as dark animals were often associated with death. This led to the breeding of Baroque donkeys with their distinctive white-yellow coats.
Hof Zoo Aims to Protect Rare Species from Extinction
The primary mission of the Hof Zoo is to keep such rare species to protect them from extinction and help them proliferate. “The situation with Liselotte wasn’t exactly optimal,” Michael Vollprich admitted with a smile in an interview with BR24. As she is not a purebred Baroque donkey, Liselotte is not suitable for the breeding program.
Instead, she is destined to become part of the zoo’s so-called “Memory Animal Project.” In this program, animals visit seniors in care facilities to provide variety and joy for the residents.
