Avalanche danger in the Bavarian Alps has risen to the fourth level

According to data from the Bavarian Avalanche Warning Service, the risk of snow masses shifting is currently assessed as high—primarily in the Werdenfels and Allgäu Alps.

In Tyrol, the situation also remains critical. Specialists have provided recommendations on what mountaineers should pay attention to during the winter period.

The avalanche situation in the Bavarian Alps is serious at the moment. The Bavarian Warning Service indicates the presence of wind-drifted snow and weak layers within the old snowpack. The most critical position is recorded in the Werdenfels and Allgäu Alps. There, during the day, the danger level rose to four—which means a high threat. In the Alpine foothills, as well as the Chiemgau and Berchtesgaden Alps, level three has been in effect all day, corresponding to significant danger.

The treachery of the situation lies in the fact that wind-drifted snow is often covered by a fresh loose layer and is practically invisible. Snow slabs can be triggered even by a single skier without any warning. Significant new precipitation is expected until Friday, which will lead to the formation of further layers of wind-drifted snow.

Avalanche danger is also growing in Tyrol

In Tyrol, up to 50 centimeters of fresh snow may fall in some places by this Friday, reported Matthias Walcher from the state’s avalanche warning center. He strongly warned against traveling across rugged terrain: It is a very dangerous time for winter sports enthusiasts outside of prepared trails.

Even seemingly harmless, moderately steep terrain can be deceptive, Walcher continued. There is always a possibility that avalanches triggered on steep slopes will reach these areas. In Tyrol alone, more than 30 avalanches were recorded in a single day on Wednesday.

Advice for mountaineers in the winter period

Those planning to head into the mountains over the weekend should check the current situation report and avoid steep slopes. It is necessary to go out on a route only with an avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel.Source: Lawinenwarndienst Bayern
