Train Briefly Derails in Regensburg District Due to Broken Rail

An incident occurred on the Passau–Obertraubling railway line in the Regensburg district: a train briefly jumped off the tracks due to a damaged rail but immediately returned to the line.

On board were 25 passengers, all of whom remained unharmed.

Passengers Escaped Without Injury

After the incident, the affected train was taken out of service at Mangolding station. All 25 passengers were uninjured, though one person required brief medical attention for stress-related issues. Following evacuation by the fire department, passengers continued their journey toward Regensburg Central Station on a replacement train.

Investigation Underway

A Deutsche Bahn maintenance crew repaired the damage. According to preliminary findings, material fatigue is believed to have caused the rail break. The Federal Police have launched an investigation into dangerous interference with rail traffic. Whether misconduct may have played a role is still under investigation.

Context: Previous Train Accidents

In July, a serious rail accident occurred in the Biberach district of Baden-Württemberg on the Sigmaringen–Ulm line, killing three people and injuring more than 40.

Just this Monday, it was also revealed that deteriorated concrete sleepers and maintenance failures were responsible for the Burgrain accident near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. On June 3, 2022, a regional train derailed there, killing five and injuring 78. Investigators concluded that better inspections and proper internal communication of warnings could have prevented the tragedy.
