Munich Bans Surfing on the Eisbach Following Fatal Accident

In the wake of a tragic accident involving a 33-year-old surfer, the City of Munich has imposed an indefinite ban on surfing at the Eisbach wave in the English Garden.

The popular urban surfing spot, long frequented by enthusiasts from around the globe, has now been officially closed for safety reasons.

City Revokes Previous Surfing Permit After Fatal Incident

The fatal accident occurred last Wednesday when a surfer sustained severe injuries at the Eisbach wave and later succumbed to them. In response, the city released a new general directive on April 23, effectively revoking the 2010 regulation that had previously allowed surfing in the area.

According to the newly issued directive, “The use of the Eisbach with small, non-motorized vehicles (in particular surfboards) in the area of the Eisbach wave at the Haus der Kunst, from the Prinzregenten Bridge to 50 meters north of the bridge in the City of Munich, is prohibited until further notice.” This formal order gives legal authority to the earlier temporary ban issued by the fire department.

Violating the ban could lead to fines of up to €50,000, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Department of Climate and Environmental Protection in a statement to the German Press Agency (dpa).

Other Surfing Areas Also Affected

Surfers seeking alternatives, such as the smaller E2 wave near the Dianabadschwelle, will find limited options as well. This section of the Eisbach falls under the jurisdiction of the Bavarian Administration of Palaces, Gardens and Lakes, not the City of Munich.

In response to inquiries from t-online, a spokesperson for the administration clarified that “bathing and surfing are prohibited throughout the English Garden areas managed by the Bavarian Palace Administration for safety reasons.” The current park ordinance explicitly states in Article 14 that “bringing in and using boats or surfboards in bodies of water” is not permitted.

Officials Warn of Ongoing Dangers in the Eisbach

The Eisbach remains a highly dangerous waterway. The Palace Administration warned that the river’s powerful current, sudden underwater turbulence, and hidden drops pose significant risks. Even experienced swimmers can be overwhelmed by the unpredictable conditions, which continue to present a serious threat to life.

With safety concerns now taking precedence, it is unclear when or if surfing will be allowed to resume at Munich’s iconic wave. For now, the ban remains in effect as officials evaluate further measures.
