Lost and Found Treasures: Munich Airport Hosts Auction Featuring Surprise Luggage

It’s that time again: Munich Airport is set to auction off forgotten and lost items, offering both curious and valuable finds to the highest bidders.

Highlights this year include a chainsaw, a hoverboard, and a lawn trimmer.

Auction Launches Saturday in Hallbergmoos

On Saturday, April 26, 2025, auctioneer Alfred Mittermeier will kick off the event at the festival tent on Predazzoallee in Hallbergmoos. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. for item previews, with bidding officially starting at 1:00 p.m. Visitors can browse through a wide variety of lost property before placing their bids.

From the Ordinary to the Bizarre

Past auctions have showcased an eclectic mix: wedding dresses, geisha costumes with wigs, African drums, backup generators, lawnmowers, and induction cooktops, to name just a few. This year’s auction promises another batch of intriguing finds, featuring items like watches, e-books, cameras, fine jewelry, hoverboards, and lawn trimmers.

Mystery Suitcases Add to the Excitement

A perennial favorite among bidders are the surprise suitcases. Some are sorted by theme—such as children’s toys—while others remain a mystery until after purchase. Although contents are screened beforehand by the airport, police, and customs, hidden treasures might still await lucky buyers.

Bargain Hunters Welcome

According to the airport, some real deals can be had: chainsaws, for example, might fetch between €50 and €200 depending on brand and condition. Electronics like PlayStations could also go for below-market prices if competition among bidders remains modest.

Proceeds Benefit Charities

Items must be paid for in cash on-site. A portion of the auction’s proceeds will be donated to charity, supporting organizations like kindergartens, food banks, local clubs, and music schools, as has been done in previous years.
