Champions League Final Turns Munich into High-Security Zone Amid Heightened Threat Awareness

In response to recent violent incidents in Hamburg and Liverpool, local authorities have revised their security protocols to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. Approximately 2,000 police officers from across Bavaria will be deployed throughout the city.

Security Measures Intensified Following Attacks in Liverpool and Hamburg

Although there are currently no specific threats linked to the event, recent attacks have raised security concerns. On Monday, during Liverpool FC’s title celebrations, a man deliberately drove a car into a crowd, injuring several people. Just days earlier, a knife attack by a mentally unstable woman in Hamburg left 15 people injured, some seriously. “These incidents have heightened our awareness,” said Thomas Schelshorn, spokesperson for the Munich Police Department. He cautioned, however, that “absolute safety cannot be guaranteed at events of this scale.”

Police Separate Fan Groups to Prevent Clashes

Authorities are preparing for large crowds, not only the 18,000 officially ticketed supporters of both teams but also thousands of additional fans expected to gather across the city, including potentially aggressive groups. To minimize conflict, police will enforce a strict spatial separation of fans: Inter Milan supporters will convene at Odeonsplatz, while Paris Saint-Germain fans are directed to gather at Königsplatz.

Diverging Risk Assessments from UEFA and Police

While UEFA has classified the match as a medium-risk event, Munich police have taken a more cautious approach, categorizing the final as high-risk. This discrepancy stems largely from past behavior of certain Italian fan groups at international fixtures. The police’s strategy is designed to prevent escalation while still allowing for a celebratory environment.

Conclusion: Major Security Operation Aims to Safeguard Festivities

Thomas Schelshorn expressed hope for a peaceful sporting event, despite the tightened security measures. With 2,000 officers on duty, clear fan segregation, and a situational strategy that incorporates recent violent incidents, authorities aim to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees. Munich prepares for a night of football under watchful eyes and elevated alert levels.
