Munich Expands Public Transit Services for Champions League Final and Major Events Weekend

Munich is preparing for one of the busiest weekends of the year with multiple large-scale events taking place simultaneously.

On Saturday, May 31, the city will host the UEFA Champions League Final at the Football Arena Munich (official UEFA name for Allianz Arena), the multi-day Champions Festival in Olympiapark, and back-to-back concerts by pop star Dua Lipa on Saturday and Sunday, June 1. In response, Munich’s public transport operator MVG has released extensive information on service enhancements and changes to ensure smooth travel throughout the city.

Increased U-Bahn Services for Champions League Final

With tens of thousands of football fans expected at the stadium for the 9:00 p.m. final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan, the MVG urges early arrival. Stadium gates and the adjacent fan zone will open at 5:00 p.m. To accommodate crowds, U6 trains will run every five minutes from 1:00 p.m. between the city center and Fröttmaning station, increasing to every three minutes from 3:00 p.m. Passengers should still anticipate very full trains and possible delays.

After the match, the U6 will continue to operate at high frequency. If crowds overwhelm the platforms, temporary closures at Fröttmaning station may occur for safety reasons. Final ticket holders will enjoy free travel throughout the MVV network, covering zones M to 6, for the entire day on Saturday.

Additionally, MVG will bolster late-night transit options, with U-Bahn trains running every 30 minutes, and expanded night tram and night bus services.

Olympiapark Events Supported by U8 Line Enhancements

The Olympiapark will also see heavy foot traffic during the Champions Festival (May 29 to June 1) and Dua Lipa’s concerts. To manage this, the MVG recommends taking the U8 line, which connects the Olympiazentrum with the main station and Sendlinger Tor. Starting at 4:00 p.m., the U8 will run every five minutes. Enhanced service will continue after events end, supported by additional night buses, trams, and U-Bahn routes.

MVG warns that the U3 line may experience high volumes, especially at stations near Olympiapark.

Bus Detours and Service Disruptions Due to Fan Zones

Several bus lines will be diverted or limited due to official fan gathering areas. Changes include:

  • Bus 100: Odeonsplatz stop suspended; eastbound route redirected via Von-der-Tann-Straße (May 28–June 2).
  • Bus 153: No service to Von-der-Tann-Straße and Odeonsplatz (May 28–June 2).
  • Night Buses N40, N41, N45: Detoured via Oskar-von-Miller-Ring; Odeonsplatz and Von-der-Tann-Straße stops omitted (May 28–June 2).
  • CityRing 58/68 and Bus 100: On May 31, the Königsplatz stop is closed; in the direction of Hauptbahnhof Nord, Technische Universität and Königsplatz are suspended; toward Ostbahnhof, Elisenstraße will serve as a substitute stop.

MVG will provide real-time updates via its MVGO app, station announcements, and signage.

Regional Rail Services Extended for Final Day and UEFA Nations League

The Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB) will also adapt its schedule for the Champions League final. Last trains from Munich to Tegernsee, Lenggries, and Bayrischzell will depart at 1:10 a.m., while services to Rosenheim, Kufstein, and Traunstein will run until about 1:00 a.m.

These extended timetables will also apply on Wednesday, June 4, and Sunday, June 8—dates for the UEFA Nations League semifinals and final, both hosted in Munich. On June 4, Germany will face Portugal.

With this coordinated effort from MVG and BRB, Munich aims to ensure efficient and safe transportation during one of its largest sporting and cultural weekends of the year.
