Two New Speed Cameras to Monitor 30 km/h Zones in Munich – Locations and Start Date Announced

Starting next week, two new semi-stationary speed cameras will be deployed in Munich to enhance traffic monitoring.

The goal is to further improve road safety in areas with a 30 km/h speed limit. According to a statement from the City of Munich, these are modern devices strategically placed in areas requiring special protection—such as near kindergartens, schools, senior centers, or on streets with a high accident rate.

Semi-Stationary Devices Expand Munich’s Existing Speed Enforcement Arsenal

The new speed enforcement units are part of the Municipal Traffic Monitoring (Kommunale Verkehrsüberwachung, or KVÜ) program and are mounted on specialized trailers. They can operate autonomously without personnel and be positioned directly along roadsides. Their ability to monitor traffic over extended periods—including during nighttime hours and on weekends—significantly improves the city’s capacity to supervise high-risk locations.

Responsibility for monitoring 30 km/h zones lies with the KVÜ, while the police remain in charge of roads with higher speed limits. With the deployment of these new speed cameras, the city aims to better safeguard vulnerable traffic areas.

Objective: Greater Safety for Children, Seniors, and At-Risk Road Users

According to city officials, the primary focus for these new devices is on areas surrounding facilities frequented by vulnerable groups—such as daycare centers, schools, and nursing homes. The intention is to permanently reduce vehicle speeds in these zones, thereby lowering the risk of accidents. The ability to monitor speeds around the clock without the need for on-site personnel is described by the city as a key advancement in traffic enforcement.

An Addition to the Existing Monitoring System

The new devices complement Munich’s existing traffic surveillance infrastructure, which includes eight mobile enforcement vehicles and a fixed monitoring station on Tegernseer Landstraße. With a combination of stationary, mobile, and now semi-stationary systems, the city can more flexibly and precisely enforce traffic safety measures across its entire urban area.
