The alert comes in response to continuous rainfall, which is significantly increasing runoff in the catchment areas of the Loisach and Isar rivers. Of particular concern is the water level of the Isar in Munich, which could reach or even surpass official Warning Level 1 by the evening hours.
Isar Water Levels Rising – Gauge Nearing Critical Threshold
According to the Water Management Office, it cannot be ruled out that the Isar River in Munich may exceed the threshold for Warning Level 1 during the night into Tuesday. As of 4:00 PM, the current water level at the Munich/Isar gauge stood at 208 centimeters, according to the Bavarian Flood Information Service (HND). Warning Level 1 is triggered when the water level reaches 225 centimeters. Forecasts suggest this mark could be reached around 10:00 PM. If so, minor flooding could occur along riverbanks. A more precise update is expected by 8:00 PM.
KATWARN Issues Alert – Residents Urged to Stay Alert
The warning app KATWARN has already issued an alert, notifying the public of the elevated flood risk. Although there are currently no official severe weather warnings for Munich or the surrounding area, the Water Management Office advises residents to continue monitoring the weather situation closely. Those living near the Isar are especially urged to stay vigilant and prepare for potential protective measures.
Rainy Weather to Continue – No Sign of Relief
A warning for continuous rain has been in effect in the Alpine foothills since Sunday, and the unsettled weather pattern persists in Munich. More rainfall is expected shortly. Forecasts for the coming days offer little hope for a return to summer weather. Those looking forward to sunshine will need to remain patient.
