Public Transport Disruptions in Munich as Gärtnerplatz Open Air Takes Over City Center

Munich — This coming weekend, several major events will draw large crowds to the center of Munich, including the popular Kocherlball in the English Garden on Sunday morning and the two-day Gärtnerplatz Open Air music festival.

The latter will transform the area around Gärtnerplatz into a vibrant urban stage with live music on three stages, attracting thousands of visitors — and causing notable disruptions to public transportation.

Bus Routes 52 and 62 Diverted for the Duration of the Festival

Due to the construction of festival stages and expected foot traffic, the area surrounding Gärtnerplatz will be closed to vehicular traffic throughout Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20. In response, the Munich Transport Corporation (MVG) will implement extensive detours for public bus services. Routes 52 and 62 will follow alternate paths for the entire day — from the start to the end of operations.

Both routes will be rerouted in both directions between Schweigerstraße and Blumenstraße, with buses redirected via Fraunhoferstraße. There, they will serve the existing stop of line 132. Additionally, in the direction of Schweigerstraße, buses will also stop at Corneliusbrücke (also part of line 132 heading toward Marienplatz).

The Gärtnerplatztheater and Baaderstraße stops will be suspended entirely on both days. Passengers traveling in this area are advised to check alternative options in advance and allow for additional travel time. MVG has asked for public understanding and recommends using the underground or tram services where possible.

Festival Brings Free Music, Food, and Summer Vibes to the City Center

The Gärtnerplatz Open Air begins at 3:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, turning the square into a festive venue with free admission. The program includes diverse musical performances across three stages, designed to appeal to a broad audience.

Saturday’s performances will feature jazz and pop music, while Sunday is dedicated to classical works. The lineup includes emerging local bands as well as established musicians from Munich and the surrounding region.

In addition to live music, the festival offers a rich street food selection and various drink stalls, creating a relaxed, family-friendly summer atmosphere in the heart of the city. Organizers expect several thousand visitors on each day and encourage attendees to use public transportation to avoid congestion.

City and Organizers Advise Caution and Patience Amid Temporary Closures

Due to the full closure of the Gärtnerplatz area during the festival, local residents, commuters, and cyclists should anticipate temporary disruptions and detours. Cyclists may also need to adjust their routes.

The City of Munich and the event organizers have asked for patience and consideration, especially during the late afternoon and evening hours when crowds are expected to peak. Local police and municipal authorities will be present throughout the event to ensure a smooth and safe experience for all.
