New Vehicle Code MU Approved for Munich District to Ease License Plate Shortage

The Munich district will introduce a new vehicle registration code, "MU", beginning in 2025 to alleviate pressure on license plate availability.

The Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Construction and Transport confirmed that approval has been granted for this additional code, which will supplement the existing “M” designation used by both the city and the district.

Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter explained the decision in an official statement: “Given the high number of vehicle registrations in both the city and the district of Munich, it was urgently necessary to act before no more license plate combinations remained available.”

Following federal approval, local authorities are currently preparing the required software updates to enable the new registration option.

From 2025 onwards, residents of the Munich district will be able to register their vehicles—including passenger cars, trucks, and motorcycles—under the new “MU” code. This will offer two alternatives for new registrations within the district: the longstanding “M” and the new “MU”.

The change is intended to reduce the burden on vehicle registration offices by separating the codes used for the city and the district. As of January 1, 2025, data shows that around 766,000 vehicles are registered in the city of Munich, while approximately 246,000 are registered in the district. With both areas previously using the “M” code, the growing number of registrations has strained the system.

To improve administrative efficiency and make it easier to distinguish vehicles between the city and the surrounding district, the Bavarian government requested a new distinguishing code from the federal government. That request has now been officially approved.

The city of Munich introduced an additional code, “MUC,” in 2023. The new “MU” code for the district marks the next step in improving regional differentiation within the metropolitan area. Authorities hope this measure will lead to faster processing times at registration offices and clearer identification of vehicles.
