Following approval from the Committee for Labor and Economic Development, the full Munich city council also approved the funding for the renovation to the Stadtwerke München (SWM) utility company at its plenary session on Wednesday. The cost for repairing the approximately 78,700-square-meter structure amounts to over 298.4 million euros, as stated in the proposal.
The renovation work encompasses the entire supporting structure with its various components—including the cable net—as well as the floodlight masts. A press release from the city notes that the complete replacement of the 11,000 acrylic glass panels, along with their buffers, clamping profiles, and sealing tapes, will be particularly costly and will require a specialized company.
Due to the strained budget situation, the proposal stipulates that negotiations will be held with the State of Bavaria, the German federal government, and potentially the European Union for financial participation. The measures are also intended to bring energy efficiency improvements and enable the use of the sports facilities for further decades. The ensemble of structures in the Olympic Park is a protected historical monument.
Mayor Verena Dietl (SPD), chairwoman of the supervisory board for Olympiapark München GmbH, emphasized: “The Olympic roof is one of the iconic landmarks of our city. It is an international trademark for Munich.”
Upon completion of the renovation, the first concerts are expected to return to the Olympic Stadium in 2028. The decision still requires final confirmation from the full city council assembly.
