Munich Police Detain Teens for Dangerous S-Bahn Train Surfing

Traffic delays occurred on the Munich S-Bahn due to teenagers. Police are investigating them for dangerous train surfing—and this is not the first time.

Munich – Information emerged regarding a dangerous situation on the Munich S-Bahn: four teenagers risked their lives on Friday evening when they “surfed” on the coupling of a moving train, the Federal Police reported. The dangerous act occurred around 7:00 PM between the Maisach and Mammendorf stations. An observant passenger immediately called emergency services.

Teens Rode on Munich S-Bahn Coupling – Not the First Life-Threatening Incident

Police officers were able to detain three of the four teenagers, aged 15 to 16, directly at the Mammendorf station on an S3 line train. According to the authority, the teens came from Munich or the Munich district. The fourth teenager had already vanished when law enforcement arrived. After an emphatic discussion about the dangers, the parents were required to pick up their children from the Federal Police office in Munich.

Repeat Offenders Caught During Police Operation – Two Teens Had Previous Records

The particularly sensitive detail is that two of the detained teenagers had already been previously reported to the police for similar incidents. According to the police, the teenagers apparently completely underestimate the dangers of life-threatening train surfing.

An analysis of their smartphones and body-worn cameras revealed other risky actions. According to the data, one of the suspects (15 years old) and an unknown person had broken into train driver’s cabins and even climbed onto the S-Bahn roof. They documented their life-threatening journeys using mobile phones and a camera. Whether the unknown person was the fourth teenager from December 13 is subject to the current investigation.

Breaking into Driver’s Cabins and Climbing S-Bahn Roofs

The operation also affected public transport: the search for the teenagers caused an S-Bahn traffic delay of 27 minutes, the police reported.

Administrative offense proceedings were initiated against the four teenagers for riding on the train coupling. The two teenagers who broke into the driver’s cabins also face criminal charges for trespassing. In another case, the main line had to be closed due to teenagers riding on S-Bahn cars, and the police deployed a helicopter.

S-Bahn Delays – Police Warn Against Fatal Dangers

The Federal Police urgently warn against the dangers of train surfing. Such life-threatening actions invariably lead to severe accidents, including fatalities. Whether riding on buffers or roofs, leaning out of doors or windows—the dangers are uncontrollable. “What is intended as a dare or for social media can quickly end in fatal danger,” the police caution. Furthermore, such actions cause track closures and train delays while authorities search for the offenders.
