Munich Airport to Host New Anti-Drone Defense Unit

Eight major airports in Germany will receive enhanced security measures against unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). Munich Airport is among them.

The Federal Police will establish a new specialized anti-drone unit, which will be deployed, among other places, at Munich Airport. This airport is one of eight considered critical infrastructure that will in the future be better protected against espionage and attacks using unmanned aerial vehicles.

The corresponding security concept was presented in Berlin on Tuesday by Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU). Other designated sites include the airports of Frankfurt, Berlin-Brandenburg, Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Leipzig/Halle, and Stuttgart. In October and November, air traffic at Munich Airport was briefly halted several times due to the detection of drones.

Dobrindt Announces Central Anti-Drone Center

According to information from the Ministry of the Interior, the unit is to be rapidly expanded to 130 specialists. Among other capabilities, it will deploy AI-based signal jamming technology as well as autonomous interceptor drones. Like all federal police special units, the anti-drone group will also be subordinate to the Berlin-based Federal Police Directorate 11. Dobrindt also announced a central anti-drone center to conduct nationwide situation analysis. He intends to coordinate the details with the interior ministers of the federal states.

The Federal Association of the German Air Transport Industry approved the federal government’s plans. Chief Executive Joachim Lang noted that the industry was relieved, as the federal center is covering the costs, given that protecting airports from drones is “a task of state sovereignty.”
