In Munich’s Hellabrunn Zoo, the rare Bavarian pine vole has given birth. These elusive rodents moved into the newly renovated mouse pavilion only a few weeks ago.
The Bavarian pine vole is considered one of the rarest mammal species in Europe. In the German Red List, it is officially classified as “extinct or lost.” The species was first discovered over 60 years ago in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Zoo Expresses Satisfaction with Rare Births
Lena Bockreiss, the curator responsible for the Bavarian pine voles at Hellabrunn, commented on the breeding success: “We are delighted with the first offspring from our breeding pair. This small but significant success shows that we have chosen the right path and can continue our work with this pair to support the conservation program for this extremely rare species.”
Hellabrunn Zoo collaborates with other institutions to protect the Bavarian pine vole. Bockreiss added: “We are in close contact with the Innsbruck Alpine Zoo, which plays a leading role in the protection of the Bavarian pine vole. Together, we are making efforts to preserve local animal species directly within our region, thereby aiming to ensure the long-term maintenance of biodiversity.”
