From Augsburg to the Allgäu: Which Swabian Zoos and Wildlife Reserves are Worth Visiting

When it comes to a trip to see animals, Bavarian residents first and foremost recall Munich's Hellabrunn or the massive Nuremberg Zoo.

These giants have long become the calling cards of their cities, but the Swabian region is ready to offer an alternative that is not inferior in quality, and in some ways surpasses its metropolitan counterparts due to its intimacy and closeness to nature. To see exotic beasts or observe the lives of forest inhabitants, residents of Swabia and the Allgäu do not need to plan an exhausting journey to a megacity at all.

Wild boars a couple of metres from the pedestrian path, majestic lions, or imperturbable crocodiles — meeting them “eye to eye” in the wild forest would hardly please anyone. However, enough places have been created in Swabia where such encounters take place safely and cause only delight. From the classic enclosures of Augsburg to farm lands and specialised bird parks — we have compiled a guide to the most interesting points of the region that are worth including in your plan for the coming weekend.

Places for Animal Observation in Swabia: Wildlife Parks, Petting Zoos, Farms

The region is rich in contrasts: here you can spend a day in a noisy zoo with developed infrastructure or head to a quiet nature park where the only sound will be the crunch of branches under the hooves of a roe deer.

Augsburg Zoo

The zoo in the capital of Swabia is a solid “mark of quality”. It consistently holds a place in the top twenty most popular zoos in the country, and quite deservedly so. More than a thousand inhabitants live on its territory: from graceful leopards and elephants to giant boas. This is a full-fledged tourist site with its own gastronomy and recreation areas. Despite the fact that animal rights activists sometimes criticise the format of animal keeping, thousands of positive reviews on Google speak for themselves — people love this place for the opportunity to see the world in all its diversity. The zoo opens at 9 am and closes depending on the season — in summer you can walk here until the very evening.

Weil Riding and Wildlife Park

In the Landsberg district, there is an estate that shatters the stereotype that a zoo is only about cages. Here, zebras and kangaroos coexist with shaggy Scottish cows and sheep. Weil is primarily a paradise for horse lovers: children can ride ponies, and adults can enjoy the atmosphere of an old estate. The entrance costs a symbolic 5 euros for adults and 1.50 euros for children. This is a fair price for a day in the fresh air, even taking into account that you will have to pay separately for some attractions on the site.

Schongau Fairy Tale Forest and Wildlife Park

Schongau offers a unique mix for those who grew up on the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. In addition to animal enclosures, a thematic trail and water playgrounds are equipped here. In the petting zoo, you can feed the animals — special food is sold right at the entrance. The park is open from 10:00 to 18:00 (except Sunday), and the entrance ticket will cost 13 euros for adults and 10 euros for children. This is a place where nature meets folklore, creating an excellent backdrop for family photos.

Lechpark Pössinger Au

If you are looking for silence and real aesthetics of the Bavarian landscape, head to Pössinger Au near Landsberg am Lech. This is not even a zoo in the usual sense, but a huge forest zone on the banks of the River Lech, where deer, roe deer, and wild boars live in spacious enclosures. Entry here is free, which makes the park a popular place for Sunday runs and bike rides. Be sure to look at the observation deck and the local restaurant “Teufelsküche” — the views there are breathtaking.

Narrow Profile: From Birds of Prey to Alpine Farms

For those who value exclusivity and want to know a little more about animals than what is written on the sign by the cage, there are truly special addresses in Swabia.

Menter Birds of Prey Park

In Konzenberg (Günzburg district) there is a place that works according to its own special rhythm — only on Sundays and for only four hours (from 13:00 to 17:00). But this time is worth it: here you can see eagles, falcons, and vultures at arm’s length and observe the precision work of falconers. This is not just viewing, but a deep immersion into the ancient art of human and bird interaction.

Waldmaurer-Hof Farm

In Altomünster (Dachau district) you can see the rural life of Bavaria without embellishment, but with great respect for animals. Highland cows are bred here — those same ones with long fringes. The farm offers excursions for small groups (55 euros), where you can enter the pen and learn everything about life on a modern farmstead. You can get here only on Friday or Saturday by prior appointment.

Wildlife Park at Lake Baggersee

Another free and extremely picturesque park is located near Ingolstadt. A walk along the Danube will lead you to enclosures with mouflons, bisons, and wild boars. The presence of the lake adds points to the location: in summer you can combine animal observation with relaxation by the water.

Allgäu Exoticism: Reptiles and a “Paradise” for Animals

The Allgäu is not only about skis and cheese. Two sites work here that definitely deserve attention.

Burgberg Animal Paradise

In this small petting zoo live alpacas, ponies, and donkeys. The rules here are strict — feeding the animals is prohibited for their safety, but you can pet and observe as much as you like. This is a cosy place with a pleasant cafe and democratic entry for 5 euros.

Scheidegg Reptile Zoo

If fluffy alpacas do not inspire you, head to Scheidegg. Mambas, cobras, huge spiders, and crocodiles live here in fifty terrariums. The zoo is located near the famous waterfalls, so the trip can be made truly saturated. An adult ticket costs 8.50 euros. Please note: reptiles have a day off on Fridays.

Swabia proves: to see wildlife, you don’t need to go to the end of the world or to overcrowded metropolitan zoos. The region offers honest, high-quality, and very diverse recreation, where everyone — from a crocodile fan to a lover of walks in the forest — will find a place to their liking. The main thing is to check the opening hours in advance and not forget the camera.
