Construction Begins for Oktoberfest 2025 as Theresienwiese Closes to Public Access

Preparations for Oktoberfest 2025 are now underway, turning Munich’s Theresienwiese into a large-scale construction site. With approximately three months to go until the official opening, the city has begun fencing off the area for safety.

Despite the closures, designated routes will remain accessible to pedestrians and cyclists during specific timeframes.

The build-up to the world’s largest folk festival has officially started. Although Oktoberfest traditionally kicks off in late September, setup on the festival grounds has begun early, requiring extensive logistical and security arrangements. The construction of beer tents, food stalls, and rides marks the beginning of the transformation.

According to a spokesperson from Munich’s Department of Labor and Economic Development, the official start date for construction is Monday, June 30. However, initial fencing began earlier, with some barriers already in place by the preceding Wednesday.

Theresienwiese Largely Closed but Crossing Routes Remain Available

Though most of Theresienwiese will function as a restricted construction zone until the festival opens, the City of Munich has outlined specific passageways that will stay open for foot and bicycle traffic during the setup period.

The following routes will be accessible under varying conditions:

From July 1 through July 31, Matthias-Pschorr-Straße – located between the Bavaria monument and Schaustellerstraße – will be completely closed. During this time, pedestrians and cyclists can use Street 5, located behind the Käfer tent and wine tent, as a detour.

Between August 1 and August 26, Street 5 will remain open but with time restrictions. From Monday to Friday, it will be closed from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Outside of these hours, including weekends, it will be accessible to both cyclists and pedestrians.

From August 27 through October 23, Street 5 will be entirely closed to the public.

Additionally, the north-south crossing over Schaustellerstraße will remain open until August 27 and again from October 23 onward. If construction allows, this route may reopen earlier than planned.

Regular users of the site are advised to remain vigilant, as temporary fencing and short-notice route changes are possible throughout the construction period. The city has requested that all pedestrians and cyclists show caution and consideration while passing through the area.
