A police spokesperson confirmed that the chances of finding the youth alive were considered extremely low. Authorities now presume the teenager is dead.
Disappeared While Attempting to Cross the River
The teenager had entered the water late Sunday morning with other members of his football club, attempting to swim across the Main at Winterhausen. While the other players safely reached the opposite bank, he never arrived. Emergency services immediately launched a large-scale rescue operation, but efforts remained unsuccessful.
Extensive Search With No Result
Sonar boats, divers, drones, and a rescue helicopter were deployed in the intensive search. Despite this substantial response, rescue teams were unable to locate the missing swimmer. Police stated on Monday that, after careful consideration of all circumstances, the search had been discontinued.
Authorities Believe the Body May Be Trapped Underwater
A police spokesperson expressed the belief that the teenager’s body may be trapped underwater, possibly entangled in aquatic vegetation, caught on a submerged branch, or lodged in a depression on the riverbed. Authorities expect that the body will eventually surface.
Background: The Teenager Was an Unaccompanied Minor Refugee
The missing youth was an unaccompanied minor refugee living in Marktbreit. He had been part of the JFG Maindreieck Süd football club, a regional association comprising six youth teams, since March of this year. The team was participating in a training camp in Sommerhausen over the weekend.
Training Session, Heat, and a Spontaneous Swim End in Tragedy
On Sunday morning, the players first completed a running session. To cool off, several decided to swim in the Main. The plan to cross the river had reportedly been a spontaneous idea. According to club officials, the 17-year-old had nearly reached the opposite bank before suddenly submerging.
Rescue Teams Quickly Deployed but Unable to Save Him
Coincidentally, a large number of emergency personnel had already been stationed nearby in Eibelstadt for a training exercise. This allowed divers, fire services, water rescue units, and an ADAC helicopter to arrive at the scene within minutes. The helicopter crew briefly spotted a person floating in the water, but the individual could no longer be located. Despite these favorable conditions, the two-hour search yielded no results.
Club Devastated by the Loss
Walter Meding, chairman of JFG Maindreieck Süd, expressed deep sorrow: “We are all shaken and devastated.” He described the youth as a motivated and reliable player who regularly attended training. The news of the presumed death has left the entire club in a state of shock.
