According to police, the teenager was with members of his football team when he entered the river but failed to reach the opposite bank. Despite an intensive search involving divers, drones, sonar boats, and a rescue helicopter, there was still no trace of the missing youth by Sunday evening.
Police Reported the Incident Shortly Before Noon
The Unterfranken Police Headquarters reported that the alert was received around 11:30 a.m. by the police operations center and the Integrated Dispatch Center for fire and emergency services. The caller reported that a person had gone under in the Main River. Emergency personnel were immediately dispatched, and a coordinated search was launched, focusing on the river area downstream from Winterhausen.
Team Swim Ends in Disappearance
Initial investigations revealed that the 17-year-old had attempted to swim across the river with several teammates. While the others safely reached the far bank, he did not appear. An ADAC rescue helicopter that happened to be flying over the area briefly reported seeing a person floating in the water. However, the sighting could not be confirmed despite an immediate response. Visual contact was lost shortly thereafter.
Search Deployed Modern Technology but Remained Unsuccessful
Multiple rescue teams participated in the search, some using boats equipped with sonar technology. Divers and drones were also deployed to scan both the water surface and the riverbed. Nevertheless, after more than two hours of intense efforts, the search produced no results.
Police spokesperson Florian Leimbach stated that there were currently no further leads that would justify continuing the search. However, he added that authorities were monitoring for new information and would reassess the situation as needed.
Police are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone who was near the Main River in the Winterhausen area on Sunday morning and may have seen something relevant is urged to come forward.
