Search Efforts Lasted Several Days
The 17-year-old had gone jogging on Sunday with his football team in Sommerhausen, a town located upstream from Eibelstadt. Afterwards, he attempted to swim across the Main to reach the opposite bank in Winterhausen. However, he never arrived and had been missing since that moment.
Search efforts began Monday, with the river section where the teenager had entered the water being combed by the water police using a patrol boat. On Tuesday, another stretch of the river downstream from Winterhausen was inspected using a drone, but without success.
Teen Was a Strong Swimmer and Lived in a Shelter
The missing youth was an unaccompanied minor refugee who had been living in a shelter in Marktbreit. According to reports, he was considered a strong swimmer. The tragic incident occurred after he had taken part in a weekend training camp with his football team in Sommerhausen.
Correction of Earlier Reports
An earlier version of the report stated that swimming in the Main between Sommerhausen and Winterhausen was prohibited. However, a police spokesperson later clarified that this information was incorrect. There is no official swimming ban for this section of the river.
