Stormy Week Ahead in Bavaria with Thunderstorms and Possible Northern Lights

The weather forecast points to an unsettled week with rapid changes and local extremes.

Monday: Rain Dominates with Isolated Thunderstorms

The week begins under heavy cloud cover across most of Bavaria. While the north and northeast might catch occasional dry spells, the rest of the region can expect intermittent rainfall. In the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms are likely, particularly along the Danube, where they may bring intense downpours. Daytime highs hover just above 20°C, with cooler temperatures in elevated regions and the Alpine foothills, where rain persists longer.

Tuesday: Growing Instability with Risk of Severe Storms

Tuesday brings a mix of sun and dense clouds in the morning, followed by a fresh wave of showers and thunderstorms moving in from the southwest by afternoon. Upper Bavaria and central parts of the state are especially at risk for severe weather conditions, including heavy rain, strong winds, and localized hail. The storm system will move northeast across Lower Bavaria, the Bavarian Forest, and into Austria and the Czech Republic.

In Lower Franconia, thunderstorms may arrive later in the day but are expected to be less intense. Temperatures range from 20°C to 26°C. After the passage of the storms, cooler air will set in.

Wednesday: Humid Heat Fuels High Storm Potential

By midweek, warm, moist air from the Mediterranean brings a rise in temperatures, particularly in southeastern Bavaria. Highs of 27°C to 28°C are forecast in many areas, and isolated locations could even hit 30°C. While the morning may start off sunny in much of the region, rain and sporadic thunderstorms will spread early from Franconia.

Throughout the day, the risk of storms increases. On the leading edge of the incoming weather front, powerful storm cells may form—especially in Upper Bavaria and along the Danube during the late afternoon. These storms could again bring intense rainfall, damaging wind gusts, and hail. The system will continue moving northeast into Austria and the Czech Republic, with cooler conditions arriving behind the front.

Thursday: Conditions Calm Down with Fewer Storms

Thursday will bring a noticeable easing in weather activity. While isolated thunderstorms may still occur in the Alpine regions, most areas will see only occasional showers. Lower Franconia is expected to remain largely free of thunderstorms. Temperatures will drop, with highs mostly just above 20°C, and even lower values near the Alps.

Friday: Sunshine Returns, Showers Possible in the North

As the weekend approaches, temperatures will begin to rise again—reaching up to 26°C in some areas. The day will be mostly sunny, although cloud cover will increase over Lower Franconia as the day progresses, potentially bringing localized showers. No severe weather is expected.

Weekend Outlook: Thunderstorms on Saturday, Northern Lights Possible

The unsettled pattern will persist into the weekend. Saturday evening may see another round of thunderstorms, some of which could reach severe levels depending on local developments.

Despite the cloud cover, skywatchers in Bavaria may be treated to a rare visual spectacle. Due to increased solar activity, there is a possibility that northern lights could be visible in the evening hours. These auroras are caused by charged particles from the sun—known as the solar wind—colliding with Earth’s atmosphere. This interaction excites oxygen and nitrogen molecules, causing them to glow in shades of green, red, and violet. If the solar storm is strong enough, these lights can extend into mid-latitudes, potentially making them visible over Bavaria.

The coming days promise not only dramatic weather, but also a chance to witness one of nature’s most breathtaking phenomena.
