Lenggries/Wackersberg/Walchensee – The mountain railways in the Tölzer Land are looking back on a successful hiking season and are now preparing for winter. However, as reported by Merkur reporter Felicitas Bogner, winter sports enthusiasts must prepare for a limitation: a valley descent is being cut for economic reasons.
- The Brauneck cable car starts the ski season on December 6th – following a successful hiking season with a strong August.
- The valley descent to Urfeld at the Herzogstand will be discontinued at the start of the season for economic reasons.
- All cable cars are currently undergoing maintenance – TÜV inspections and servicing are in full swing.
Brauneck Cable Car with Strong Summer Results
The sunny autumn holidays provided a crowning conclusion to the hiking season at Brauneck. Since Monday, the cable car has been undergoing maintenance. Simultaneously, staff are preparing the slopes and lifts for winter operation. Things kick off on December 6th. By then, most mountain huts on the Brauneck will also be closed for their annual break.
“We are looking back on an overall successful summer season. Particularly the months of June, August, and September were very well attended – with August being the strongest month,” says Brauneck cable car spokesperson Julia Keck. Only July saw losses due to weather conditions.
Extensive Maintenance Work at Brauneck
Jörg Findeisen, Managing Director of the Herzogstandbahn at Walchensee, is also pleased with “passenger numbers at a high level.” The absolute highlight of the year: the opening of the “King of the Mountains Theme Trail” at the Berggasthof Herzogstand. “The presence of H.R.H. Luitpold of Bavaria and State Minister Michaela Kaniber attested to the significant impact of this project for the region,” said Findeisen.
Maintenance work is currently in full swing. At Brauneck, splicing work is being performed on the cable of the Milchhäusl-Express lift. “The cable needs to be shortened and then reconnected by splicing,” explains Keck. The reason: the cable elongates during operation due to the load. After 10 to 15 years, shortening is necessary. In addition, there are the usual maintenance and inspection tasks, as well as TÜV certifications.
Ski Season in Upper Bavaria: Valley Descent to Urfeld Discontinued
The Herzogstandbahn is also undergoing a thorough check-up. At the start of the maintenance period, three resin sockets are being fabricated. “These cable end fixings must be replaced at least every five years,” explains Findeisen. After that, the real work begins: cables are inspected, both supports are examined, and the motor, gearbox, and couplings are checked for wear. “Every year, several hundred points are inspected according to the maintenance schedule of the cable car manufacturer and the electronic control system,” says the cable car director.
Hopes are high for a snowy season. Ski operations at Fahrenberg are being prepared. However, there is one limitation: the valley descent to Urfeld will be discontinued at the start of the season for economic reasons.
Blombergbahn Continues Operation on Weekends
Unlike Brauneck and Herzogstand, the Blombergbahn operates differently: it remains in service on weekends. During the week, the technology is thoroughly checked – the cable undergoes magnetic induction testing, all 115 chairs are taken down, and all installation parts are inspected. Snowmaking equipment and snow groomers for the winter toboggan run are also being made operational. From December 20th – the start of the Christmas holidays – the Blombergbahn will then be open daily.
